Steadfastness – The Key to Success in Spirituality
From:
Sri Sathya Sai
Dear Ones,
The salutations which all of you have sent have been received. Distribute My love to all boys — the drops of My life. Laziness is useless in any field of endeavour, and in the field of spirituality, it is positively useless. Tendencies like laziness—a sense of taking things easy and a feeling of tiredness—do not have a place in the spiritual field. A student in order to succeed in an examination undertakes any amount of labour. If the ordinary worldly education requires a sense of steadfastness and single-minded devotion to achieve the goal, then ask the boys to imagine what a tremendous, severe and intense effort is required in the field of Supra-worldly education!
Spending one’s time by seeking unnecessary and futile debates and discussions, being satisfied with things associated with the senses and running after desires is neither good nor healthy. To be under the illusion that there is water in the mirage and to seek this water, getting tired and fatigued in the process does not fetch any dividends. This is not going to quench the thirst. He who becomes a slave to the senses and runs after his desires, will be led to the same sense of disappointment, frustration and despair. A musk deer, unaware of the fact that the perfume emanates from itself and imagining that the perfume is elsewhere, looks and searches for it. In the same manner, man, unaware of his real identity and true nature, thinking that God is elsewhere, harbours the illusion that He resides in Kailasa or Parthi and wants to go there. This is indicative of a mind that is not secure or strong. The situation of some of our boys is like that of one who sits in the bank of the flowing river of life but still suffers from intense thirst.
The attitude of today’s students is like that of one who sits by the side of a heap of rice but still suffers from the pangs of hunger, not realizing the fact that the effulgent Self exists within them. They are groping here and there in the dark, not realizing that the world of Bliss is within alone. However, it cannot be seen with the eyes. The one and only reason for this is a life based on and lived in the senses. How fortunate they would be if they were to only plunge into the adventure of experiencing Sai and putting in the required effort. Truly speaking, our boys are definitely “Punyulu” and positively “Dhanyulu”. However, by still not putting into practice Sai’s ideals to the required extent, they have not been able to give full satisfaction to Sai. Too much and excessive talk is not decreasing. Developing contact with each other is increasing. These should be reduced. For the present, if they were to rectify these two, they will secure Sai’s love. Students do not believe in the fact that Sai is in them, around them, witnessing everything, listening to everything. There is no greater or more creditable thing than to realize that this is a fact.
With love and blessings,
Baba
