Purification of Chitta—True Tapas
From:
Sri Sathya Sai
My dear,
Herewith, Blessings. It is coming, the Makara Sankramana, and the days that are divine lights, which illumine the direction, for the living beings that strive steadily to attain the Purushottama, God. One’s duty is fully fruitful when the auspicious acts are done during the auspicious period of time, as a result of the unique combination. To gain both these together, grace is essential.
The final goal (Paramaavadhi) of living beings is the attainment of the Presence of God (Daivasannidhi): real Ananda is derivable only through this precious treasure (Pennidhi); the Ananda one gets from worldly treasures is but momentary. All Sadhana undertaken to purify the Chitta (inner instruments of consciousness) are really instruments for the realisation of the Divine. For, Divinity is indelibly imprinted only in the purified consciousness. When that is done, one is immersed in the sweet exhilaration of that Ananda. This is the true sign of the highest, the most evolved living beings. In that sweet state, the world and the worldly attachments are naught; there remains no trace of such. Freedom from these is the state referred to by names such as Moksha (Liberation), Mukti (Release), Swatantra (Independence), Sveccha (Freedom), etc. Japa, Tapas and other beneficial activities are advised for the sake of cleansing the Chitta. There is no Sakthi higher than that which can be acquired by loving God, with fullness of heart. That cleanses the heart best. To imagine that the chitta or heart is being cleansed by wild illusions and practices, guided by worldly desire is itself an illusion. Life is the right means for accomplishing purification best.
However well you scrub a thing with earth, in order to clean it, you need water to wash off the earth that has stuck. So too, the Chitta that has been scrubbed with Japa, Tapas, Dhyana and Bhajan has to be again cleansed with the water, Prema. Therefore, Prema is the very breath (Pradhana-Prana). It is the very basis of life. When you reflect coolly, you will find that it is the essential core of all. In reality, it is the Brahman—the Brahma Sutra.
One can realize only that which exists; nothing that does not exist, already. If the scholar, the scientist, only opens his eyes, he can see the Embodiment of Wisdom, revealed, resident in all. You are not able to take up any other sadhana: Manana (Meditation on what has been heard), Sravanam is easy, Chinthana (Reflection on the meaning and significance of what has been hear) is easier still. So, carry on Sravanam, Manana and Chinthana in the spirit of Love. This is indeed Tapas. That will transform your thamas (inactivity, indolence, ignorance) and transmute it.
Without a purified Chitta, whatever effort is done can bring only transitory satisfaction; it can never give genuine satisfaction. For lasting satisfaction (Nityatripti), rely on real love (Sathya Prema); experience true Love and enjoy the Bliss of true Love.
Read this letter to the devotees who gather there. Communicate my blessings to Bhaktas. Thus... your Sai.
With blessings,
Baba
