Attain God's Love
From:
Sri Sathya Sai
All letters sent by the boys have reached me. Their contents have been noted. Their devotion and attitude of surrender are indeed good; but now and then the boys tend to forget Swami's ideals. Each person desires happiness and peace. Nobody wants misery.
However, the mistake in them lies in the fact that they are not able to realise where true happiness and peace are obtained. Real happiness and peace can neither be found in wealth and possession, nor in academic, material or scientific vocations. These give only transitory peace and happiness.
Real peace exists only in the Love of God. Man's true endeavour in life should be to attain God's Love. This is the primary distinction of man. From this knowledge dawns wisdom, and wisdom in turn bestows happiness and peace. That is why Thyagaraja inquired of the mind whether the world gave happiness or God gave happiness. Worldly happiness appears nectarine in the beginning but turns out to be poisonous in the end. On the other hand, the Divine Path seems to be difficult in the beginning but takes on a nectarine form in the long run.
Sai has no gains whatsoever from anyone. Nevertheless, keeping in mind the inner bliss of all, Sai gives directives. Whatever Sai says, whatever Sai does, whatever Sai thinks, are all for your welfare alone. As He Himself has everything in His hands, there is absolutely nothing that He desires. Whispering with each other, feeling jealous if Swami talks to someone else, discussing the good and bad of others are signs of supreme ignorance.
The boys are unable to comprehend the Sai Principle, the Sai Nature, without knowing that it is the result of good deeds done in previous lives that brings some closer to Sai, and which makes others feel unnecessarily bad. Without wasting this opportunity, make good use of Sai. Once lost, the Lord of Parthi will never again be accessible. So serve and secure the Lotus Feet while you can. I have made this known to you on many occasions. Do not fear the world. In reaching the Lord of the world (Lokesha), if you are frightened of the world (Loka), then who is to save you? Not caring for the world, all of you should serve the Lord. I have also told you many times before that, by giving you devotion and suffusing you with vitality, I shall liberate you.
The boys are good. By engaging themselves in unnecessary talk they are spoiling their pure nature. Reduction of idle talk will abolish exaggerated mannerisms. Purity will increase in the absence of these two and Godhood will be attained. The nature of Sai's love is devoid of even the slightest trace of selfishness. Lives aspiring for such divine fresh and blessed love are sacred indeed. Those who realise this and endeavour for this are deserving receptacles of Sai's Love.
Like the insane monkey which spoils the entire garden in its frenzy, those who have not been able to deserve this Love are sinning by envying those who are receiving and are to receive Sai's Love. To extinguish such sins, the festival of Holi or the burning of desires has come into existence. This auspicious festival is intended for the shedding of one's prejudices, the discharging of one's selfish motives, the burning of rajasic and thamasic traits and strengthening of one's love for God. In a nutshell, it is to destroy desire (Kama) and attain God (Rama).
Having attained Sai Rama who is always with you, to desire for the world is indeed foolishness. Having attained such singular privilege due to the merits of many lives, it is indeed unfortunate that our boys still hanker after worldly pleasures. Sai is the personification of Love, the embodiment of sweetness and the repository of all power. Desire the grace of such Sai and experience and enjoy everlasting peace and happiness.
On the Holi day, Sai Love must be distributed equally to all. Tell them to change their old and obnoxious traits, to live with good conduct and to vindicate their human birth. This is Sai's Love.
Baba.
